The Correlation Between Supermassive Black Hole Mass and the Structure of Ellipticals and Bulges

چکیده
We demonstrate a strong correlation between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and the global structure of ellipticals and bulges: more centrally concentrated bulges and ellipticals (higher Sérsic index n) host higher-mass black holes. This correlation is as good as that previously found between SMBH mass and central velocity dispersion, with comparable scatter. In addition, by carefully modeling the bulges of disk galaxies so that bars, inner disks, and the like do not accidentally contribute to bulge light, we find that the correlation between SMBH mass and bulge or elliptical luminosity is similarly close. 1.

Multiple black holes in galactic bulges
We study the number and interaction rates of supermassive black holes in galactic bulges as predicted by hierarchical models of galaxy formation in which the spheroidal components of galaxies are formed by mergers. In bright ellipticals, the number of events that can eject a central supermassive binary black hole is large. Central binaries must therefore merge in less than a Hubble time – other...
متن کاملThe growth of supermassive black holes in pseudo-bulges, classical bulges and elliptical galaxies
Using results from structural analysis of a sample of nearly 1000 local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we estimate how the mass in central black holes is distributed amongst elliptical galaxies, classical bulges and pseudo-bulges, and investigate the relation between their stellar masses and central stellar velocity dispersion σ. Assuming a single relation between elliptical galaxy...
متن کاملA Correlation between Galaxy Light Concentration and Supermassive Black Hole Mass
We present evidence for a strong correlation between the concentration of bulges and the mass of their central supermassive black hole (Mbh) — more concentrated bulges have more massive black holes. Using Cre(1/3) from Trujillo, Graham, & Caon (2001b) as a measure of bulge concentration, we find that log(Mbh/M⊙) = 6.81(±0.95)Cre(1/3)+ 5.03± 0.41. This correlation is shown to be marginally stron...
متن کاملFormation of Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bulges: A Rotating Collapse Model Consistent with the Mbh − σ Relation
Motivated by the observed correlation between black hole masses Mbh and the velocity dispersion σ of host galaxies, we develop a theoretical model of black hole formation in galactic bulges (this paper generalizes an earlier ApJ Letter). The model assumes an initial state specified by a a uniform rotation rate Ω and a density distribution of the form ρ = aeff/2πGr 2 (so that aeff is an effectiv...
متن کاملJoint Formation of Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies
The tight correlation between black hole mass and velocity dispersion of galactic bulges is strong evidence that the formation of galaxies and supermassive black holes are closely linked. I review the modeling of the joint formation of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in the context of the hierarchical structure formation paradigm. 1.1 Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bul...
